Guided Tour of the Exhibition Dedicated to Willem de Kooning at the Gallerie dell’Accademia

Ambra D’Antone, Curatorial Assistant, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, guides members on a tour of the exhibition dedicated to Willem de Kooning.

Dutch-born, U.S. artist Willem de Kooning is regarded as a key figure in twentieth-century U.S. art for his contribution to the development and success of Abstract Expressionism alongside Jackson Pollock. The exhibition at the Gallerie dell’Accademia explores the impact that two trips to Italy, in 1959 and 1969, had on the artist’s production. Willem de Kooning and Italy features about seventy-five works, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures, created between the 1950s and the 1980s. Highlights include large drawings from the Black and White Rome series (1959) created in Afro Basaldella’s Rome studio, and thirteen small material bronze sculptures.
