The exhibition, developed by chief editors of the New York-based magazine, Architectural Record, featured six U.S. architectural firms in the vanguard of contemporary design. Each explored new forms and uses for modern building types, providing a fresh perspective on structures that have been stereotyped and replicated globally. Drawings, digital media, and three-dimensional installation presented a 21st century vision for the shopping center, residential high-rise, sports arena, parking garage, spiritual space, and highway interchange.
Exhibition teams and projects exhibited: George Yu Architects, Los Angeles (a new prototype for shopping centers achieved by weaving together elements of conventional commercial spaces with a landscape of terraced residential buildings and public park space); Kolatan/MacDonald Studio, New York (the "Resi-Rise" project as an example of "vertical urbanism" which consolidates living and working spaces into stacked pods, growing and changing over time); Studio/Gang/Architects, Chicago (an exploration of the potential of a stadium to both accommodate throngs of people and disappear when not in use); Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis, New York (the "Parking sections" project brings parking together with retail, commercial, and residential components); Predock_Frane, Los Angeles (the "Acqua alta" project uses a pixelated field of 5,000 nearly invisible filaments to evoke high-tide water patterns of flooding in Venice); Reiser + Umemoto, New York (a redefinition of a highway interchange by engaging the space between the road and its adjacent territories).
