Alexander Calder

Le Grand Passage

1974

Alexander Calder’s paintings are less known than his sculptures. The sun and moon are characteristic motifs of his mobiles. There is a sculptural quality to the passage of the broad red band through the meandering black ‘river’—presumably the grand passage of the title. Le Grand passage was also the French title of a celebrated movie by King Vidor, Northwest Passage (1940).
