Barry Flanagan

The work consists of two blocks of smooth white Carrara marble that appear to have been rendered pliable—kneaded, twisted, and molded with gargantuan hands. In 1982, the year Barry Flanagan represented the United Kingdom at the Venice Biennale, he noticed two stone sea-horses placed on the Grand Canal terrace of Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, home to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, which were a part of Peggy Guggenheim’s gift to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Flanagan’s creatures are interpretations of, or homages to, these seahorses, with their equine upper torsos and coiled fishtails.
