First Quarry is the diminutive bronze image of an artificial lake created by the abandoned site of a stone quarry—one surface is watery and the other sides are imprinted with the negative of the quarry walls. This is a characteristic theme for Bryan Hunt—the negatives of things, meditations on man and nature, the making concrete of something vivid but mysterious. Such lakes are palpably dark and deep, even menacing (some horror movies exploit this): their dimensions and shape belong to the realm of the unknown. Hunt strips away the mystery and offers us something we could never have otherwise known, which is as good a definition of art-making as any.
