Witches’ Mirrors
Witches’ Mirrors

Workshop organized by the Education Department of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection

The workshop is made possible by the collaboration with Gallerie dell’Accademia di Venezia and the Canestrelli store managed by Stefano Coluccio.

Witches’ mirrors have a long history and have been used in both practical and artistic contexts. These spheres of blown glass were believed to ward off the evil eye, trapping evil spirits under their surface. The optical distortions they generate fascinated countless artists, who used them to explore new angles and compositions. Jan Van Eyck, Parmigianino, and Maurits Cornelis Escher are but a few who over the centuries inserted these objects in their compositions. The workshop will see participants using witches’ mirrors to distort reality and generate optical illusions.
