The Spiritual and Material Investigations of Barbara Hepworth
The Spiritual and Material Investigations of Barbara Hepworth

I love making sculptures that have the quality of both stone and sky.

The first event of the lecture series Inside Form: Hepworth, Giacometti, Calder: The Writings and Thoughts of Three Twentieth-Century Sculptors sees Giovanna Brambilla explore the complex connection between Barbara Hepworth’s writings and her revolutionary sculpture.

Hepworth's theoretical musings, personal notes, and a rich correspondence allow us to highlight the creative process born of the tension between choice of materials and definition of forms. The ideas expressed in her writings took shape in a series of innovative sculptures, designed to create relationships between form and space and between the human condition and creative tension, with a sharpness and inventiveness that made Hepworth a beacon of the age.
