"Tapio Wirkkala at Venini" and "Toni Zuccheri at Venini": Guided Tour

A 20th Century Murano Glass historian, Carla Sonego, will give a guided tour of the exhibitions at LE STANZE DEL VETRO.

These exhibitions highlight the works of artists and designers Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) and Toni Zuccheri (1904-1974). Both are known for the distinctive glassworks that they produced at the Venini furnace in Murano, beginning in the 1960s. Wirkkala and Zuccheri’s original and colourful designs revolutionised the world of glassmaking whilst continuing to reflect its contemporary turn towards minimalism. The artists are known for their playful series of fowl and farmyard animals, as well as their vibrant portrayal of the plant kingdom. Toni Zuccheri’s style is in close dialogue with Tapio Wirkkala’s Nordic aesthetic.

Carla Sonego graduated from IUAV in 1996 with a thesis on the architect Carlo Scarpa’s formative years. In 2012, she completed her PhD thesis on the history of Murano glass during the interwar period (Scuola di dottorato IUAV). From 1997 onwards, she dedicated her work to the history of Murano glass in the 20th century and collaborated on numerous exhibitions and catalogues, including Carlo Scarpa: An Architect’s Glass, Brescia 1997; Vittorio Zecchin: Pittura, vetro, arti decorative da 1878-1947, Venezia 2022. Since 2012, Carla Sonego has assisted with research on LE STANZE DEL VETRO’s Venini exhibitions, all of which are held on San Giorgio Island in Venice. In 2014, she became the co-curator of these exhibitions’ catalogues.
