Guided Tour of the “Marcel Duchamp and the Lure of the Copy” Exhibition

Curatorial Assistant Ambra D’Antone lead members on tours of the new temporary exhibition dedicated to Marcel Duchamp's interest in blurring the lines between original and copy.

The exhibition centers on a masterpiece from the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the Box in a Valise (1935–41), a portable museum holding 69 replicas and miniatures of works by Marcel Duchamp, acquired by Peggy Guggenheim in 1941. This work is the starting point for an investigation of Duchamp’s practice of subverting the traditional hierarchy between original and copy. Indeed, in reproducing his work in different media, on various scales, and in limited editions, Duchamp radically redefined what constitutes a work of art and, by extension, the identity of the artist. The exhibition features prestigious loans from Italian and U.S. museums and from private collections, including around thirty works from a private collection in Venice.
