Helen Frankenthaler is one of the key figures of the second generation of American abstract painters who played a pivotal role in the transition from Jackson Pollock’s Abstract Expressionism to Marko Rothko’s color field painting.
Through her innovative “soak stain” technique, which involves thinning down paint with turpentine to achieve a translucent effect similar to watercolor, Frankenthaler challenged the boundaries of established pictorial methods by exploring a new relationship between form and color. The exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi interweaves works created by Frankenthaler between 1953 and 2002 with select works by some of her contemporaries, including Robert Motherwell, Kenneth Noland, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Anne Truitt, and others.
