A Guided Tour that explores the temporary exhibition Bohemian Glass: The Great Masters at Le Stanze del Vetro
The exhibition explores the contemporary glass sculpture of postwar Bohemia through the work of six major artists: Jaroslava Brychtová, Václav Cigler, Vladimír Kopecký, Stanislav Libenský, René Roubíček, and Miluše Roubíčková. The renowned glass art production of Bohemia—one of the historical regions of modern-day Czech Republic—was severely threatened when Czechoslovakia was overpowered by the Communist regime in 1948 and the country’s borders were sealed off, denying any form of trade and exchange with the Western world until 1989.
The exhibition highlights how, despite the restrictions imposed by the regime, these six artists become pioneers of the new practice of “artistic glass,” and continued to create sculptures, stained glass, architectural spaces, installations, and site-specific works. Furthermore, the exhibition explores how they inspired new generations of artists to work with this material through an intense collaboration with professional schools and fine art academies.
