Art historian Franca Lugato guides members on a tour of Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, a magnificent Venetian palazzo facing the Grand Canal.
Commissioned by the rich nobleman Andrea Loredan to designs by architect Mauro Codussi, Ca' Vendramin Calergi once boasted one of the city’s most extensive art collections, including works by Sebastiano del Piombo and Titian. The tour traces in the palazzo’s fascinating history, from the transfers of ownership that involved the Calergi family to the influence of the Duchess of Berry in the nineteenth century. Participants will be able to admire works by Palma Giovane, the “cuori d’oro” artistic decorations, and elegant classical boiserie. A particularly significant event in the history of the palazzo is related to Richard Wagner, who stayed and died there in 1882. Today, Ca’ Vendramin Calergi house the Venice Casino.
