Floating Cinema – Unknown Waters

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection takes part in Floating Cinema – Unknown Waters, a cultural festival taking place from August 26 to September 13, 2026, in the waters behind the island of Giudecca in the Venice Lagoon.

The festival features a floating stage, viewable from private boats or a shared floating platform, where attendees can enjoy a diverse array of screenings and performances by both international and local artists.

Floating Cinema – Unknown Waters explores experiments related to moving images, bridging cinema and visual arts. Previous editions have showcased pre-cinema techniques – such as shadow theater and magic lanterns – silent films with live soundtracks, film projections, and digital technologies.

As part of the festival’s extensive program, on Saturday, September 12, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents Häxan (1922, 104’), film directed by Benjamin Christensen which combines historical research, documentary, staged re-enactments, grotesque fantasy, and early cinematic special effects to examine how beliefs in witchcraft emerged—and how women accused of witchcraft were persecuted. The film will feature a live soundtrack by Elvin Brandhi and Sara Persico.
On the same evening, Microclima presents Meditazione Senza Oggetto (15’), a live performance by Enrico Malatesta.

Tickets

• If you own a boat, book the BOAT OWNERS ticket. This ticket will give you access to the space on the water in front of the screen, where you can come and moor.
• If you do not have a boat, book your ticket PEOPLE BY FEET (WITHOUT BOAT). This ticket will give you access to the event reception, where a ferry will take you to the platform where you can follow the screenings.
