Art historian Franca Lugato guides members on an evening walk exploring the Sestiere of Castello, one of Venice’s most evocative and authentic neighborhoods, exploring the rich history, art, and picturesque views of this fascinating part of the city.
The tour starts at Campo dell’Arsenale, the productive heart of the Serenissima and a unique example of proto-industrial organization. Passing through the Porta da Terra, one of the earliest examples of Venetian Renaissance architecture, Lugato retraces the history of the republic’s naval exploits and the activities associated with the construction of its galleys. The tour continues towards Riva degli Schiavoni and Via Garibaldi, a vibrant urban thoroughfare created from an ancient canal and now lined with shops and markets that offer a glimpse of daily life in Venice. Crossing the area of San’Anna, the group explores San Pietro di Castello, the city’s ancient religious heart and the seat of Archdiocese of Venice until 1807. The tour ends at the Giardini Napoleonici and the Riva dei Sette Martiri, where historical memory and the urban landscape intertwine, reflecting the city’s transformations up to the present day.
