On Saturday and Sunday, January 11 and 12, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection presents a two-day workshop for blind, partially sighted, and sighted visitors dedicated to Marina Apollonio’s artistic practice.
Marina Apollonio employed a rigorous mathematical approach to create works that challenge visual perception. Moving beyond two-dimensionality, aspiring to movement and dynamism, making the viewer an integral part of the work, these are some of the intentions of Apollonio, an Optical artist whose work explores the phenomenal possibilities of elementary forms and structures.
But how can Optical art be experienced beyond the gaze?
Can movement and optical illusions be perceived without seeing?
Double Meaning Masterclass: Beyond the Gaze is a two-day workshop that encourages reflections on visual perception. Blind, partially sighted, and sighted participants will be introduced to scientific studies and research in optics. Following this a workshop will see them experiment with different sculpture techniques and artistic practices based on the use of the body, investigating and challenging established conventions of seeing.
Thetactile exploration is led by Valeria Bottalico, the designer and curator of the Double Meaning: Tactile Tours at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection program. The sculpture workshop is curated and led by blind artist Felice Tagliaferri.
