Behind the Scenes: Curating the Exhibition "Manu-Facture: The Ceramics of Lucio Fontana"

On the surface, a finished exhibition looks seamless. But every detail emerges from countless decisions: what to include, how to display and light, what to explain or leave open to a viewer’s interpretation.

The first event of the lecture series Touched by Clay: From Lucio Fontana to Contemporary Practice steps behind the scenes of curating this exhibition, revealing how possibilities and limitations continually shaped the approach to the show. Within the intimate galleries of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the exhibition team worked to balance the interplay of the art and architecture, the pacing of the narrative and visitor flow to let each piece vibrate. Over seven years, every choice evolved through dialogue between artwork and space. The process shaped the curator as much as the curator shaped the exhibition. This lecture traces that journey—how these elements intertwined to create an installation that invites slow looking and intimate encounters with Fontana’s ceramics.
