Art Aperitif

Gražina Subelytė, curator of the exhibition Peggy Guggenheim in London: The Making of a Collector, guides members on a special tour of the show dedicated to Peggy Guggenheim’s time in London and her first gallery, Guggenheim Jeune.

The exhibition explores the U.S. collector’s formative years, with a special focus on her London gallery, active between 1938 and 1939, which became a crucial period for the promotion and consolidation of the avant-garde in Britain. Through a bold and innovative exhibition program, Guggenheim Jeune offered an alternative to the conservative establishment, becoming a beacon for avant-garde artists at the time. The gallery became known for championing local and international artists, many of whom were connected to abstraction or Surrealism, shaping the era’s cultural debate. By examining key works and archival materials, the tour highlights how this period defined Guggenheim’s identity as a collector and patron of the arts, anticipating the vision of establishing a museum, which eventually came to fruition in New York and Venice.

Following the tour, participants can enjoy a complimentary aperitif at the Museum Café.
