Guided tour of the exhibition "Peggy Guggenheim in London: The Making of a Collector," with Ambra D’Antone, Curatorial Assistant.

Ambra D’Antone, Curatorial Assistant, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, leads a guided tour of the temporary exhibition dedicated to Peggy Guggenheim’s years in London and her first gallery, Guggenheim Jeune.

The exhibition traces Peggy Guggenheim’s formative years in the United Kingdom, focusing on her gallery, Guggenheim Jeune, active in London between 1938 and 1939. The gallery played a pivotal role in increasing the visibility and acceptance of contemporary art in Britain, emerging as a radical alternative to London’s largely conservative institutions. Guggenheim Jeune’s bold exhibition program provided a crucial platform for the international avant-garde, particularly abstraction and Surrealism, and helped shape the era’s cultural debate. During this period, Guggenheim consolidated her identity as a collector and patron. She conceived the idea of establishing a museum—a vision that would ultimately be realized in Venice. The exhibition brings together key works presented in the exhibitions at Guggenheim Jeune, alongside similar works from the same period and archival material, documenting a period of intense artistic experimentation and cultural innovation, marked by the profound sociopolitical tensions that preceded the outbreak of World War II.
