Exhibition dedicated to Art and Science for the “A scuola di Guggenheim” Project

From April 7-11 the Peggy Guggenheim Collection will host the exhibition Art, Science and Education, the product of an annual project, “A scuola di Guggenheim”, organized for all schools of the Veneto Region. This year the project has benefitted from a partnership with the Fondazione Marino Golinelli of Bologna, which is active in the promotion of scientific research and education. The theme has been ‘Art and Science’, and on the influences, methods, and languages of the respective disciplines.

Although art and science may appear to be irreconcilable, given their diverse subject matter and methodologies, there are nevertheless many affinities. Language, for example: both share a specific vocabulary fundamental to describing methodological processes. The two fields possess many methodological similarities; artists and scientists alike begin their research by observing reality, society, and the context in which they operate. Artists have always studied contemporary social and cultural change, which they question and then interpret. Often these changes are made possible by new technological and scientific discoveries. Similarly, scientific research frequently “invades” environments charged with cultural, ethical, and social issues, evidence of how art and science are, in fact, both strongly connected to daily experience.

The exhibition Art, Science, and Education presents projects by each participating class on themes proposed during the various formative stages of the program. It introduces the figures of artist and scientist and investigates issues related to sense and perception. Subjects such as astronomy, matter, the concept of the void, and the relationship between madness and genius are also considered. The show includes a great variety of works, including two collective installations created by students from various schools. They were made possible by Artist Kit, which gave each participant the opportunity to think individually of a component for the final collective installation. A room of the exhibition will be dedicated to ten works created by ten recent graduates of the Accademia delle Belle Arti, Venice, who through the course of the year have also explored the theme of art and science.

First organized for the academic year 2003-2004 and continuously supported annually since that time by the Regione del Veneto, the “A scuola di Guggenheim” program involves students and teachers in interdisciplinary tours of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, contextualizing art in the historical, literary, scientific, and philosophical spheres of modern and contemporary culture. Now in its sixth year, 5,263 students and 622 teachers participated in the project in 2008-2009.
