March 6 – May 26, 1996
On March 6, an exhibition of books and prints commissioned by the famous Parisian dealer and publisher Ambroise Vollard (1867-1939) will open in the new wing of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice.
Vollard opened his Rue Lafitte gallery in Paris in 1895 with the first major exhibition of paintings by Vincent Van Gogh. He was an early patron of artists such as Cézanne, Renoir and Picasso, whose first one-man exhibition was held at Vollard’s gallery in 1901. The exhibition presents the complete set of Vollard’s 44 publications (livres d’artistes) as well as some 80 prints by artists such as Bonnard, Rodin, Denis, Séguin, Van Gogh, Bernard, Cézanne, Degas, Renoir, Puy, Laprade, Dufy, Picasso, Rouault, Redon, Maillol, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Chagall, Derain and Braque. The exhibition, curated by Ralph Jentsch, originates from a private collection and was previously presented at the Museion, Bolzano, where it closed on February 18, 1996.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue raisonné, Ambroise Vollard Éditeur, edited by Ralph Jentsch (Verlag Gerd Hatje, Stuttgart, 1994) and by a booklet (excerpted from the catalogue and printed in two languages) with essays by Ralph Jentsch, Pier Luigi Siena (director of Museion, Bolzano) and Karole Vail.
The exhibitions and programs of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection are supported by the Regione Veneto and by Intrapresæ Collezione Guggenheim: Aermec, Arclinea, Bisazza Mosaico, Cartiere Miliani Fabriano, DLW AG, Gruppo 3M Italia, Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, Impresa Gadola, Luciano Marcato, Permasteelisa, Pomellato, Reggiani Illuminazione, Rex Built-In, Sàfilo Group, Swatch.
