Man Ray
1927
Untitled, 1927 is part of Man Ray’s continued experimentation with the series of photographs known as Rayographs. The artist’s ability to play with objects and his power to disturb their accepted definition rapidly became the delight of the Surrealists. Many of these works, such as Untitled, 1927, have the qualities of Duchamp’s readymades; their virtue lay, not in the skill required to produce them, but in the illogical surprise of combined and often disparate objects. Here Man Ray has combined flowing blonde hair with glass, gloves and hand to create a photograph captivating in the simplicity of its form and the diversity of the poetic associations it evokes.
