Pietro Consagra
1959
Mythical Conversation is part of a group of works created by Pietro Consagra in the late 1950s and early 1960s, the titles of which all contain the word “colloquio” (“conversation”). The sculptures were created with several materials, sometimes used together in the same work. From the 1940s Consagra, who was a member of the Forma I group, became invested in formulating a non-objective artistic vocabulary that would establish a dialogue between the object and society. This interest is reflected in the references to dialogue and myth in the title of the work. Although the perforated and superimposed elements “converse” with each other, the work’s flat, two-dimensional character, which directs the viewer’s attention to its dynamic surface (the alternation of full and empty elements, the planes that overlap and withdraw). The significance of the relief is amplified by the perforation of the surface, which frees forms that create figurative associations and render space an active component of the composition.
