Bernd and Hilla Becher
1988
These German artists, a husband-and-wife-team, made systematic photographic series of old, often industrial, architecture and constructions. These houses are from the Siegen district, where Bernd Becher was born. The frontality framing of the image instills it with minimalism and clarity akin to diagrams and engineer drawings. The Bechers sought to shed light on the individuality and sculptural qualities of buildings. They thus referred to their works as “anonymous sculptures.”
