Henry Moore

Family Group

ca. 1944 (cast 1956)

Family Group emerged from a broad series of ideas developed by Henry Moore between 1944 and 1946, related to a commission received from the village of Imping, United Kingdom, which was eventually left unfinished. The work consisted of two figures sitting side by side, each holding a child in their lap, evoking Renaissance images of the Madonna and Child. The light but solid effect achieved by Moore highlights the rounded forms that echo throughout the competition, capturing light and revealing the material qualities of bronze. The family group, which appears solidly anchored to the heavy bench that functions as a rectangular base, looks inspired by the formal solutions found in ancient Egyptian statuary.
