Julius Bissier
July 16, 1960
In 1953, the German painter and draughtsman Julius Bissier began to paint compositions in egg-and-oil tempera, which he called "miniatures." They are populated by entities which, though abstract, seem to allude to man-made objects and forms from nature. Like still lifes, they are infused with symbolic undercurrents.
