In 1953, Bissier, the German painter and draughtsman, began to paint compositions in egg-and-oil tempera, which he called ‘miniatures’. They are populated by entities which though abstract seem to allude to man-made objects and forms from nature. Like still-lifes they are infused with symbolic undercurrents.
