The exhibition focused on innovative proposals for rebuilding New Orleans and the U.S. Gulf Coast in the wake of hurricane Katrina. It showcased winning designs of an international design competition for new housing in New Orleans, and explored the historical, architectural, and cultural contexts for rebuilding the areas devastated by the storms of 2005. The design competition featured proposals from practicing architects and students for multifamily housing in New Orleans, and designs from students for single-family houses.
The exhibition also included a special section, What Next, developed by Tulane University, that presented urban design and planning proposals for New Orleans, such as a major downtown park and performing arts complex designed by Thom Mayne of Morphosis. Drawings, physical models, computer models, and mock-ups of the winners were exhibited along with a film by Neil Alexander and photographs by Michael Goodman. In addition, a film clip from Design/e2, a television series on sustainable architecture, produced by Kontentreal, highlighted various approaches to the development of the ecologically fragile areas.
