Savor Kindness Because Cruelty is Always Possible, incised on the seat of this white marble bench or footstool, is one of the texts by Jenny Holzer known as the ’Survival Series’ (1983-85). Her marble benches, begun in 1987, use a familiar and inviting format to compel viewers forward to inspect their inscriptions. This is one of an edition of 10, plus 2 artist’s proofs, created in 2003. A second text from the ‘Survival Series’, Go Where People Sleep and See if they are Safe, is engraved on a red granite bench (1983-85) by Holzer, also on view in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection gardens.
