#48 belongs to the series of the ‘Stripes’, executed by Louis shortly before his death. In reaction to the loaded brushes, thick paint and gesture associated with Abstract Expressionism, Louis sought to eliminate the artist’s personal mark through a controlled, quasi-scientific, parallel arrangement of color stripes. The visual effect produced by the luminous palette defines #48, which is otherwise empty of allusions or meanings beyond that which is visible.
