The Parachutists, 1944
Duco enamel on canvas, 76.2 x 101.6 cm
Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation, Venice
Gift, Ethel Baziotes 2004.89

The Parachutists was shown in 1944 in Baziotes’ one-man exhibition at Peggy Guggenheim’s historic New York gallery, Art of This Century. The cloisonné black lines and luminous range of primary colors remind us that Baziotes once worked in a stained glass factory. The emphatically structured surface also reveals the influence of Cubism. The title gives an illustrational quality, although we know of no anecdote to explain this. Certainly, parachute drops were a common feature of the Allied efforts to expel the Germans from northern Europe during World War II.
