Di Suvero’s non-figurative sculpture is conceived in an intuitive and improvised manner, similar to the Abstract Expressionist approach to painting. He seeks to give life to his forms, instilling them with a sense of immediacy and joy. This sculpture was executed shortly after Di Suvero nearly died working on an elevator in a building. Its animated quality might, therefore, embody the choice of life over death.
