This collage is built on the forms of a guitar and shows a sophisticated knowledge of Cubism. Following the establishment of the Czech Republic in 1918, Cubism became briefly a national style in architecture and the applied and visual arts. Čapek, of Czech nationality, was a prolific writer, playwright, journalist and political activist as well as artist. He is best known for his play R.U.R. (1920) which introduced the word ‘Robot’ to the international lexicon.
