Peggy Guggenheim’s friendship with the British Surrealist Jennings in 1937 came at an important time in her life, when she was energetically seeking to learn all she could about contemporary art. It was upon his suggestion that she gave Yves Tanguy an exhibition at her Guggenheim Jeune gallery in London in July 1938. In November that year she showed two collages by Jennings in the Exhibition of Collages, Papiers-collés and Photo-montages. Seal is a typical collage by him from the mid-1930s. The juxtaposition of two different images in reproduction, signifying two contrasting realities, induces the simplest possible jolt to the psyche, setting in motion mental activity in the Surrealist mode.
