David Smith is considered among America’s greatest 20th century sculptors, and his work post-World War II is associated with American Abstract Expressionism, of which he was the leading exponent in sculpture. This work, of metallic enamel sprayed onto paper over stencils, is strongly related to Smith’s important late sculpture, an example of which can be seen here in the Nasher Sculpture Garden.
