Soffici, Florentine poet and critic, was the first to publish a review of Cubism in Italian (1911). The trofeino of the title was Tuscan dialect for shop signs, often crudely painted but, for Soffici, exquisitely Italian in form and content. The thick impasto of Small Trophy, strenuously worked with the brush, is comparable to Russian avant-garde painting of the time, with which Soffici was familiar. The still life, lyrically suggestive of a rural hostelry, includes a newspaper, La Nazione, dimly visible in the lower part.
