Fragmentation of a Street (Scomposizione di una strada), 1914
Oil on canvas with collage insert, 63 x 53 cm
Gianni Mattioli Collection
Long-term loan to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice

Together with Dynamism Bar San Marco, this is an extremely rare example of Ottone Rosai’s brief Futurist phase. The urban iconography and the themes of dynamic movement and of overlapping planes of receding forms, resulting in the fragmentation of abstract-like forms, make this painting on of Rosai's strongest attempts to apply futurist theories onto his Tuscan environment. The subject—a Medieval street—looks forward to Rosai's humble subject matter of village scenes and peasants when in the 1920s, and particularly during his association with the regionalist Strapaese group (1926-29), he abandoned Futurism in favor of simple compositions and Impressionist technique.
