Bottles and Fruit-bowl is generally acclaimed as Giorgio Morandiís first masterpiece. The pale cerulean blue of the upper background and the dusty terracotta of the table top are exquisite in their refinement, and their meeting is rendered delicately atmospheric by the white paint scumbled along the horizon line. The contrapposto of the vertical fluting of the bottle on the left and the horizontal of the fruit-bowl is scanned by the flat unmodulated white of the obelisk-like bottle in the center. The relative neglect of the chiaroscuro or geometry of the fluting patterns indicates the degree to which Morandi has focused on tonal harmonies and surface pattern.
