As a member of the Italian Spazialismo movement, founded by Lucio Fontana and others in the 1940s, Tancredi’s abstract painting deals with the creation of space through the painted mark, but also with the conviction that he was painting artistic equivalents for events or astronomical singularities in outer space. The work of this painter owed much both to his familiarity with Peggy Guggenheim’s collection of the avant-garde (Pollock above all) and to Guggenheim’s patronage through exhibiting and selling his work.
